Pareidolia is a psychological illusion where a vague stimulus is perceived as significant. Carl Sagan (not a psychologist, but general smart guy) postulated that humans are “hard-wired” to see faces as a survival technique. That’s why we see a man on the moon, the Virgin Mary on toast, naked ladies on Rorschach tests, and a surprised face on this coffee lid.
By the way, I got the coffee at McDonald’s. Normally no one can drag me into one of those, but they’re offering free coffee all day for the next two weeks, no purchase necessary!

Not only does it look like a face, it looks like a VERY AWAKE face… eyes bulging and everything. Fitting for a coffee lid.
