Last Pack
I bought my first pack of cigarettes when I was 12 in 1980. Back then clerks believed you if you said they were for your mom or dad. That first pack was a Marlboro 100 Box and cost seventy cents. Over the course of my smoking career the prices kept climbing and climbing. When cigarettes topped $5.00 a pack I gave them up in favor of little cigars that – through a loophole in the tax system – cost under one dollar per pack. Over time that loophole has been slowly closed and as of November 1, 2009 they now cost almost as much as normal cigarettes. I told myself that when the loophole closed I would quit and now is the time.
