Toxic Avenger
I went to see The Toxic Avenger today at The Music Hall on the Danforth, just east of Broadview (Streetview). I got free tickets from a friend (thanks, Old Man!) who got the tickets compliments of Ticketmaster.
I saw The Sound of Music on stage last Thursday, and I found that this was a more enjoyable experience overall. The musical comedy is about a geek-turned-toxic superhero who tries to clean up New Jersey and falling in love with a blind librarian on the way. He has to fight the town’s evil, corrupt mayor (what, a corrupt politican in Jersey?!?) from dumping toxic waste in his town. The musical numbers, while not extremely creative musically, were generally hilarious, although some lyrics were hard to pick out due to subpar audio engineering. The live band rocked and so did the set design and lighting (building many different scenes from piles of toxic waste barrels).
The main character of Melvin Ferd III / Toxie was played solidly by understudy Peter Deiwick. Brittany Gray played Sarah, Melvin’s blind love interest. She was good, but a little annoying (but perhaps that is the nature of her character). Jaime McKnight (the white dude) and Daren Herbert (the black dude) each played probably 5 different characters (a couple in drag) and were great in all their roles. Louis Pitre gave a stunning performance as the Mayor, Ma Ferd and a nun. Her most impressive scene was in the musical number “Bitch/Slut/Liar/Whore” where she changed costumes over 10 times (switching between the role of the Mayor and Ma Ferd) while continuing to sing in both her characters’ voices.
I did find that there were moments in the show where I was a little bored because they talked too much, but they would quickly blow that away with a funny musical number. Overall, it was a great musical comedy and definitely worth looking at if you’re in town (there’s also a show in NYC). The Toronto adaptation also makes a jab at Hamilton, our smelly neighbour down the lake (I don’t know Jaffer, so I’m allowed to make Hamilton jokes).
Currently listening to: Sufjan Stevens’s Illinois album.
